| All adults
are invited to participate in an essay contest entitled "Put It In
Writing @ Your Library". The rules for the contest are as follows:
The contest is open to adults ages 18 and older.
Adults will write an essay set in or near the Alexandrian Public Library. All essays must begin with this sentence:
"The book landed at my feet with a soft thud. When I reached down to pick it up "
Essays must be typed using one side of the paper, double-spaced, and should be at least two pages in length.
Each adult may only submit one essay.
Each entry must be accompanied by a separate cover sheet stating the entrants name, address and phone number.
All judging of essay must remain anonymous. Names should only be on the cover sheet, and not the essay.
All essays must be submitted to APL by 5:00 on Friday, November 4, 2005. Mailed entries must be postmarked not later than November 4, 2005.
The essays will be judged on content, grammar, spelling, punctuation, style and consideration of the contest rules.
The decision of the judges is final.
The winning essay will be published in the Mt. Vernon Democrat. The winner shall have their photo taken with their favorite book to be used on a poster and bookmarks promoting reading. One poster will be on display at the library. The winner will receive their own copy of the poster and 50 matching bookmarks. The winner will also receive a $25 Tequilas gift certificate.
The winner grants APL the right to use their name and exhibit their essay and to publish and otherwise use posters and bookmarks containing their picture without further notice, compensation or permissions. No royalties will be paid at this or any other time.
A list of the names of all entrants will be published in the Mt. Vernon Democrat.
